Important changes have been made to the legislation that governs our international routes to registration. The process for registering dental professionals who qualify outside the UK has been in need of modernisation for a long time. The reforms amend our legislation, replacing outdated and rigid rules governing the process for international registration.

The final strategy follows the 2022 consultation on our plans, which saw three times the responses received on the regulator’s last strategy consultation. The feedback enhanced our understanding of the current pressures on dental professionals and the difficulties people are facing in accessing NHS dental care.

The number of dentists on the UK Register, following the recent annual renewal period, has increased slightly when compared to the average over the previous four years. On the morning after removals there were 43,130 dentists on the Register. This is a 2.2% increase from the previous year, which is almost double the average growth over the previous four years (1.2%).
